Akuma 101: The Vortex (part 1)

"The Vortex" is another name for Akuma/Gouki's wake-up mixup metagame. While most characters have this as well, Akuma's is special in that he has a staggering amount of options, and most of them are relatively safe. I think that's reason enough for it to have its own name, and so did Arturo Sanchez, who is said to have coined the term itself.

Untechable knockdowns are what you're going to want to use to start up and continue the vortex, as it leaves your opponent in a large guessing game where percentages are not in their favor. The objective is to keep making your enemy guess wrong every time the get up off the ground, and then knocking them down to start it all over again.

I like to break "The Vortex" a.k.a. "Holy Shit, Batman" into three steps: Knockdown, Setup, and Mixup. With these three steps you can rinse and repeat steps 1 to 3 until your opponent can break free of the death vice the vortex has on them (or they're killed by it).

Im kind of new to akuma.. The cross up tatsu does that mean it cant be blocked??? And am I able to time it right so if a character wake up SRKs it will hit him first? And last question how am I able to tell if my cross up tatsu is a cross up or not?

@wccira Cross-up tatsu means it must be blocked the opposite way, so they have to hold forward as I'm approaching them to block it. You know it's a cross-up if you go over their head and land on the other side.

@MusicViaInstrument Umm you can, but it's can be difficult because of the crappy D-pad the 360 controllers have. If you really want the game, my advice is to either buy a stick (expensive but worth it in the long run) or by a Madcatz fightpad, you'll get the most out of the game with either of those.

@1shaughness2 im not the guy who you wanted to answer you but i will give this tip. im not the best akuma player.. but if you space your crossup tatsu correctly on wakeup they will whiff the dp every time and you will nail them with the tatsu and if the idiot keeps spamming dp just keep doing the cross up tatsu into sweep until they are dead
