The Synod of Bishops has expressed the proximity of the universal Church to the Christians of Iraq and has done so by recalling the birthday of Cardinal Emmanuel III Delly, Chaldean Patriarch of Babylon. The Patriarch was born in 1927 in Telkaif and was ordained a Chaldean priest in Mosul on December 21, 1952. He has been a Patriarch since December 3, 2003 and Cardinal since November 4, 2007. His Patriarchate has been marked by the persecution and suffering of Christian communities in Iraq and by the departure of his flock to other countries n search of a peaceful future. According to Zenit News Agency, the Patriarch has asked for the prayers of Catholics around the world for the Christians in Iraq and for the necessary mobilization for the recognition of their rights.
