Sometimes stars are born when you least expect then. Rogersville senoir Tory Groover is one of the top high jumpers in the state history. But if not for a friend, he may never have known it.
Tory is this week's Wendy's High School Athlete of the Week.
Rogersville's Tory Groover was a basketball player and a soccer player but one day a friend told him he should try track. His response: Why not?
"It was a bit of a fluke and he turned out to be pretty good at it," said Rogersville coach Brandon Kovach.
As a junior, Groover finished third in the state. It was earlier this season at the Willard relays when he really took off.
"I felt the best I've ever felt that day," Groover said.
"He just wound up and there he went: seven foot and 1/4 inch," Kovach said.
That toppled a 20-year-old school record. A similar jump at the state championships Friday and he would own the top jump in Missouri Class 3 history.
"I don't care if I get a state championship. I just want to do my best and it will follow," Groover said.
