This is a short video of my visit to one of Frank Lloyd Wright's first Usonian Houses located in Florence, Alabama. This house is appropriately named The Rosenbaum Residence, after it's original owner who lived in the house until 1999. The city of Florence bought the house and completed an intensive restoration. This video is a presentation for my English Composition class.

  • the surrounding homes just look so out of place and ordinary. OK video, some nice shots but I really feel the choice of music didn't do it justice.

Thank you though. I hadn't seen this house since the late 60's and it looks good.

  • @wiguy3 I agree the music was very out of place, but it was a college project, and I had to do a commentary over it's innovations and reasons behind the design rather than have the music playing. It was the only music that was about the same length of the video and was relatively low key.

  • Very attractive house. It lets the outside in. I corresponded with someone who lived just a short distance away from the Rosenbaum house.

  • I loved the visit to Muscle Shoals, and Florence. The house was stunning, and it exceeded my expectations. Glad to see someone else truly appreciates fine architecture.

It was my understanding that Frank Lloyd Wright didn't do much work in the S - SE United States, so any examples of his design are rare there.

There is an entire book about the Rosenbaum house, which also mentions the Usonian concept & touches on highlights of Wright's life as well.

  • Yes, It is his only house in Alabama, and it is the only one I know of in the Southeast. I also have a book about him that talks about his Usonian concept, and all of his most famous buildings, and a lot his his lesser known works.

  • Awesome video, well done. I am a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Houses.

  • Heck I am a Rosenbaum and I have never even heard of this house until now. Now I want to go see it.

  • For the record, Wright built several buildings in the south. He did the original structures at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL, as well as homes in South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia.

  • That is right, very few Wright buildings in south east, it took a very intelligent, cultured and brave person to hire Wright, perhaps they were in short supply during that time in that part of the country. Wright was a progressive, the south , not so much then. An example today is the fact that the contractor given the job to restore it wanted and strongly suggested to tear it down and build a new one, can you imagine the tacky details and materials that would have been used, scary.

  • @troyjbell

Other people have copied his influence with a varying degree of success. But his genius is unique.
