This is a video screen capture of the Asus 1000HE running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.1. Snow Leopard runs surprisingly well on this little netbook.

Here's what's demoed in order:
The Intel Atom processor is correctly identified in 'About This Mac' as the Atom N270 processor running at 1.6GHz.

Function keys for the volume controls were added thanks to a hotkey program. These work by pressing Ctrl+F12 for volume up, Ctrl+F11 for volume down and Ctrl+F10 to toggle mute. (Note other function keys not demoed are activated by Fn+Key for the brightness up/down and sleep functions.)

The software and features of 10.6 run great, such as Safari, QuickTime Player X and Time Machine. Here Time Machine is put through its paces to restore a deleted file from a previous backup. Also installed is Sun VirtualBox running a virtualised copy of Windows XP Home. Windows XP runs very well, VirtualBox can run it in windowed, full screen or seemless mode, additionally copy and paste between Mac OS and Windows is available, as is folder sharing between Host and Virtual OS's. Lastly Photo Booth is shown to be working with the built-in webcam.

The hardware features of the Asus 1000HE running Snow Leopard are also working, such as wifi (with the help of Ralink's wifi utility), Bluetooth, sound, sleep and ethernet. Battery charging within Mac OS X works just like a regular Mac, the battery indicator recognises when AC power is plugged in and calculates accurately remaining battery life and charge time.

  • Question: how do I set up keys to adjust the volume? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • @jonmcclay i can't remember, but it's just a simple keymapping software for mac os

  • Neonuke, maybe you provide dd (tar.gzipped) image of your partition?

    How about eeepc 900?

  • @quiteinsaneblablador i don't have the netbook with me anymore, so unfortunately can't help you there.

  • How much space it took from your hard drive? And is it modified install (exept something is missing or added manually) because I would like to try out this on my EEE 901 but since it has only 4GB main SSD, I gladly would like to hear does it fit there (and does size expand over 4GB in some time after using OS X)?

  • @rutkutusperatus not totally sure how much space a Mac OS X install takes up, but I reckon 4Gb should be enough space. cheers

  • Does it lag? how fast is your computer? i have 2GB ram will it lag on mine?

  • @cdl78 I don't really have a lot of time to do that, maybe in the future. I had to follow the steps to one tutorial and use the files from another, it's just a matter of trying several times until I got it working. good luck
