OVERVIEW
Your contribution to defence operations is indirect fire delivered in support of the arms that close with and destroy the enemy.

WHAT THEY DO
Field Artillery Soldiers are members of Field Artillery units of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. Like Armoured, Infantry, Air Defence Artillery and Combat Engineer units, Field Artillery units are part of the Combat Arms team that actually engages the enemy. The Field Artillery's contribution is indirect fire delivered in support of the arms that close with and destroy the enemy.

Field Artillery Soldiers — normally called "Field Gunners" — have the following primary duties:

Position, load, aim, fire and maintain field guns, including the LG1 wheeled, 105-mm howitzers, and the M109 self-propelled 155-mm howitzer;

Handle, sort and store artillery ammunition;

Establish line communications using field telephones and sophisticated radio equipment;

Use and maintain personal weapons and section-level weapons up to and including machine-guns and anti-tank weapons;

Drive and maintain various wheeled and tracked vehicles;

Operate technically advanced command post computers, laser range-finders and fire-control computers;

Operate and maintain survey and locating equipment

Provide fire-support advice to the Infantry and Armour; and

When necessary, fight as an infantry (includes use of personal weapons, reconnaissance and section level tactics).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Field Gunners must be physically fit and able to function well under pressure and as part of a team. They must also be courageous, self-reliant, adaptable and possessed of good learning skills. Mathematical ability and a keen interest in technology are highly desirable.

  • @888MikeM888 Its probably one of the best places to be on the battlefield, aside from rear echelon people... at least thats what a former artillery officer told me.

  • is that Jesus at 00:23?!

  • @888MikeM888

    For the US, it kind of sucks because we frequently have to do Infantry type jobs because not much Artillery is needed at the moment.

  • Not trying to sound like a coward, just making sure I know what I'm getting myself into, how high is the chance of death as an Artillery Soldier?

  • @WhynottBelieve oh really, i never knew that, its called whisky battery here in Gagetown now, its a training battery, non deployable. i guess pet must be a relitavely new base

  • @spetsnaz891 This was back in 1978 -81 we were still using the old leftover Guns from Korea !05 MM howitzers. the new kid on the block were the now old M109's 155MM Howitzers. Back then 2RCHA was in Gagetown and 1RCHA was in Shilo. Anyway ty for the update I was under the Impression They had been disbanded. Have you ever seen this Vid

  • @WhynottBelieve 2RCHA is in Petawawa.....

  • There is no feeling quite like a chest compreesion when pulling the lanyard.; what a rush. to bad they use blanks on remeberance day gun salutes. it seems so boring when you know the public isn't getting the real show. the real bang for their buck.. I served with 2RCHA in Gagetown and spent about 6mnths in shilo. showin the boys how to do it right. jjk It was probably the most exciting 3yrs of my life.I think every young Canadian should server their nation.

  • @ultipball Correction, I skimmed through your question and missed the part where you mentioned deployed. Yes, when you are deployed you will be issued a side arm.

  • @ultipball Unless you're an officer, most likely not. There are some situations where you will get a sidearm but for the most part no.
