George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 -- July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist.Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. Among his best known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera, Porgy and Bess (1935).
Early in 1937, Gershwin began to complain of blinding headaches and a recurring impression that he was smelling burned rubber. Doctors discovered he had developed a type of cystic malignant brain tumor known as glioblastoma multiforme. Although some tried to trace his disease to a blow on the head from a golf ball, the cause of this type of cancer is still unknown. It occurs most often in males, accounts for 52% of all brain cancers, and is nearly always fatal. Gershwin died intestate. All his property passed to his mother. In 2005, The Guardian determined using "estimates of earnings accrued in a composer's lifetime" that George Gershwin was the wealthiest composer of all time.

  • ok, i admit having tried extensions with masking tape and so forth on the tips of my fingers, can't press the keys down. anyhow. oh well, its too hard for me to play in the first place.

  • you have to have very long finger stretch for the keyboard to even start the piece. my hand is not large enough and it never will be, plus , its a really hard thing to play unless you studied at least eight or so years, maybe six years, its not for a beginniner, unless the student is like a julliard serious type. not for the casual once a week lesson, you can go gray and wear false teeth before playing this from memory, or at all. well, its a goal, huh? how to grow fingers longer though?

  • he had a moog synth sound years before the thing was invented in this piece

  • when i was a little girl about twelve, already very familiar indeed with his music, read his life story and when i got to the part where he died i cried. and i was not a compassionate type of child, rather a selfish sort. that meant he really really touched me in a spiritual not explainable with words type way that all of you who are thrilled to hear this , feel and go to. its a dream type place. imagine how ahead of his time he was musically a rare genius. i think he , downloaded from god.

  • brought lovely memories to an old girl. wonderfull.

  • Someone get me a new heart. My heart erupted from the sheer beauty of this song...

  • When I heard the beginning I just started laugh nonstop and I didn't even know why. It was that awesome. XD

  • It's neither the 1924 nor the 1927 recording. It dates from much later, at least well into the 1930s, and probably a 1942 recording.
