I think sometimes (especially our age group) can become a little over obsessed with the idea of documentation (think all the photos we take!). I believe it's all about balance, and self reflection on your actions - what you're doing and why (e.g. is it worthwhile for me? - just as you were saying :D) thanks for sharing aly!

I know there have been many times when I was recording something and enjoyed re-watching it, but it always takes away from the moment when it's actually happening. And it's made me more aware of when it's really important to bring out the camera.

@justinhabit I agree, in some situations having a camera can become part of the experience, and being able to rewatch a lecture can help you notice things you didn't before. I've been reading lots of minimalist blogs lately and some would say that experiences aren't worth saving, that it's best to keep moving forward. One guy said he fills up notebooks with writing, then throws them away because that writing is done with. It all depends on your perspective of what's worth saving and what's not.

@rebexington That's true, it is a lot easier to document things now than it used to be. Glad you didn't die hiking (and were fully immersed in living the moment)!
This is SO relevant to me right now. I've been talking about an issue like this with Kassie (kassiehp0593). We've wondered why some YouTubers have turned from people sharing videos of their thoughts and emotions to putting up videos of friends and making parodies. There's a place for the latter, of course, and I'm not condemning it for any reason, I just miss vlogs a lot (like yours! :) ).
I'm torn on this subject. I mostly just agree with what you said, haha.

@eversinceimmortal I've noticed that too! Like Kristina (italktosnakes) used to be one of my favorite vloggers, and now her videos are always clips of events I didn't get to go to which makes me sad lol. It does seem to be something that is happening with a lot of youtubers...I wonder why.

I'm a photographer by trade, but whenever i'm out with friends, or at a party, or a gathering or an event... I'm never the one who takes pictures. I'm always too busy having fun. I take pictures all the time for school and work-- so when it comes time to actually do something, i DO it, lol.

As a filmmaker, this question is constantly addressed. The basis of film is to exemplify one such moment, but it still has to be selective and it must have perspective, else we're just lifestreaming - regurgitation without processing. I think we try to document everything because we become increasingly involved in the significance of every moment, and place overwhelming importance on a specific event's impact on our lives, yet in reality the selective analysis afterward is of most importance.

@bbrungar Thanks for sharing the filmmaker's perspective - that's really interesting. Mo Willems also said that he wants his work to look easy, like it took 5 minutes, even when it was a huge struggle to produce. I suppose film is the same way, when you document hours of footage, but have to be selective and pick the important moments...and hope in the end it looks easy and flawless?
