You have to feel Shirley with your heart to understand the depths of her talent. She was a great interpreter of jazz. The" Her's To Life" CD belongs in every serious jazz lovers collection. For me it is one of my most cherished possessions.

Both Shirley and Sinatra understood
all there is about phrasing ...and...
breathing . . .and when to end a phrase
with one long breath . . .

What a singer

Irene Kral also recorded it. That's Irene not Diana.

Shirley Horn was simply the best--Here's to Life is a magnificent album, and there are songs from that album--the title cut, this one, Estate'--that will just break your heart, they are so lovely. I had the great good fortune to see this great lady one year at Yoshi's in Oakland's Jack London Square--oh my! She has a lullaby quality to her voice and playing that just slays me. I miss her greatly, but I'll always have her.

Didn't she quit music just before she was about to make it big back in the '60s? Such a shame. She could have been as widely recognised as lot of the other great Jazz divas, if she hadn't.

Is it possible I am just discovering this incredible talent. I should be ashamed if I were not so deeply grateful.
