Dzigar Kongtrül Rinpoche explains that the beauty of life as a practitioner is being comfortable with negative and positive sides of our mind, not striving to have a serene mind all the time. One should appreciate the opportunity to work with different mental states. Over time one will gain confidence and ability to shift the mind through the practice of Bodhicitta -- "In the midst of adverse circumstances ravaging your life, not allowing yourself to be brought down." This is different than striving to obtain a peaceful mind with "one fix" and expecting it to stay that way.
