laugh. is written in a melodic mode built on the fifth scale degree of the harmonic minor scale, known to klezmer music as the ahavoh rabboh mode. The harmonic progression largely follows an alternation every two measures (with some exception) between the adjacent I and II chords, arpeggiated in first inversion within the repetitive groove theme presented by the horn. The pre-recorded accompaniment utilizes four different laughs most notably, the premier laugh stylings of M.S. and B.G. The laughs provide melodic, harmonic and rhythmic support for the horn, and are heard throughout the piece transposed, augmented, and in retrograde.
The integration of video with this work was very much an afterthought. The star of the video is of course, Jeremy Frederick Wilson, A.K.A. YouTube sensation, Bumpity Boo. It was an accident that I stumbled across Bumpity Boo last year, scouring the internet for horn-related YouTube videos. Bumpity himself is a young horn player he is a bit of a character and I am thoroughly entertained by his many rants and antics. It is my hope that you will be as well.
