@DasHearach I agree, but everything I have read says that Marty's version was a cover of Gordons song (they came out in the same year, 1965), not a song written specifically for Marty.
Now if you had said that Marty's version was the better known of the two, that might be true, but original - nope.
Marty had plenty of great songs of his own, so theres no shame in doing a good cover, and while some covers are better than the original, I prefer Gordy's version anyway, thanks!

@donquixote2u If Marty was the first to record it then I recon that would make it the original version. Many composers never perform their own work so the first recording or performance must be the original!

@impressionable1 an original version but written by Gordon Lighfoot? then its not original,is it?

you might want to check .. i think Marty Robbins wrote this song way back ..

The easy genius of Red Shea.

@musiclover3x Yes, The First Time is great but he first recorded that in 1966 and it has been on many of his albums since but I can't think of anything since 1970 other than Me and Bobby McGee. Anyway we both agree he is pretty special.

@allendale18 Try listening to G.L version of `The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. It is fabulous and takes the song to a level that only Gordon could have done.

I heard he wrote this while driving a truck across Canada
Thank you so much for posting this great song in high quality.
