I'm pretty sure red + yellow = orange. that's why you got that orange color in the beginning. Since the salts are a white-ish color, the red by itself will get diluted to a pink color so all you need is a little bit of red. The more food coloring you use, the more intense the color. So pink = less red, Red = a lot more
