The Brooklyn Cake Walk

Pathé 6888/10422B.C. *37
Breveté Disque S.G.D.G

Paris, c. 1906

Gespielt von der Pathe Studiokapelle.
Played by Pathé's in-house brass band ("Harmonie Pathé Frères").

(english text further down)

The Orophone soundbox from the Orotone Company in Chicago is also able to play hill and dale records.
Sadly the original celoloid diaphragm had been destroyed, so I replaced it with a Columbia "Viatonale" alu diaphragm .

Because I haven´t a Pathe saphir needle, I used a on the tip rounded darning needle. Just the right size for Pathe records and made from hardend steel.
Not as hard as a saphir - but no black dust on the tip after the play!
Neverless I use such a needle only a few times on hill and dale records...

Here the electric transfer of the record:

  • you can buy saphire pathe needles (nowadays glass i think) for £40 if you want me to give you the detales of the person seling them let me know, and its very interesting to see big berta playing a pathe, i wish i could play pathe records!!!

  • @kirtley2010 I only have a handful of pathe records - so £40 is to much for my money bay ;)

The quality of the Pathe records is realy great, if you think about it, that it is recorded before 1910.

You may find the Orophone/Orotone soundboxes frequently on ebay - also capable to play Edison records - so look for it ;)

    Is your Gilbert tonearm arrived?

I´m curious about your gramo "Hi-fi" experiments :-)

  • Amazing machine there! Well done!

  • Did you use the seperate microphone on this video? The audio sounds little bit different from other videos you used the microphone. It would be better if you can do it again with seperate microphone!

  • @formiggini i like ragtime!!! looking forward to that
