These two lovely Growlers (37906 & 37901), seen here attempting to damage the Ozone Layer and my lungs at the ELR Diesel Extravaganza in July 2008.

  • So thick you could chew it...Hellfire...

  • @craigybus1

    I think I did!:-)

  • Yes, though I now have an idea how 'Capstan Full Strength' smokers must have felt!:-)

Next time I'll take a gas mask I think!

  • I'm surprised that all the trendy wendys in the government haven't insisted that all Class 37s carry a large notice on the side saying that breathing this stuff may damage your health!:-)

  • No it's genuine alright, I had the video camera set up on the fence, and was standing a few yards behind taking stills, I'd just forgotten that the camera was running. When I played it back and heard it I was going to edit it out, but it gave me a laugh hearing it, so I thought I'd let it stay in there.

That clag was really foul tasting I can tell you, yuk, just thinking about it brings it all back (up) again!:-)

  • The interesting point is that these locos are not REAL 37s as they are powered by a wholly different power unit which has nothing to do with the original class.

  • the european plate moved 2m during this....

  • @florianska6 Agree entirely. Nice to see the oldies still running but these engines are very obviously well past their sell by date with most probably worn rings and clogged injectors the reason for the antisocial emissions.

A shame that when these things are restored more work isnt put into the engine rebuild to get them to run clean, no one wants to see clouds of black unburnt fuel belching out...

  • Just awful.

These foul diesels should have been condemned years ago. Poor design in the first place. Diesels should not have to emit smoke in this way.

High time BR went all electric - they have had well over 40 years so to do, since steam was abolished.
