For R/C folks: Nithromethanol from nitro engines works just fine as well, but burns with an invisible flame

The coughing on the vid was from my 'assistant' Mike - who did report getting a lung-full of unburnt highly toxic methanol fumes - all in the interest of science.

Seriously though folks - methanol is poisonous if ingested (i.e. you drink it ) and you should take care to not breath in the fumes (although Mike is still alive after a lung full!). Conduct your experiment outdoors or in a well ventilated shed. Take care with fire and remember broken glass is sharp.

do you have a substitute for methanol? or a way i could distill some or obtain?

I got the methanol from a local model shop - its sold as fuel for model racing cars - other people have had success with meths.
