The seed of what would grow into Rocket and The Ghost was planted years ago. Kiyoshi Matsuyama, Lily Claire, Brian Kesley, Sean Gavigan and Stuart Bidwell struck up a friendship when they consistently crossed paths while playing in different bands (The London Souls, Lily & The Parlour Tricks, Raccoon fighter, Alex Winston). After watching each other perform over the years and admiring each other's musical abilities, the five friends finally decided to work together.
Songwriters and vocalists Kiyoshi and Lily officially met outside of a dive bar on the lower east side. Lily was on her way to a recording session and spontaneously asked Kiyoshi if he'd like to join her. A collaboration was born then and there, inspired by a mutual love of bands such The Arcade Fire, The White Stripes, and Tom Waits. Kiyoshi and Lily started performing together during the fall of 2011, playing the covers they bonded over and an increasing number of co-written originals. The more they wrote, the more they realized their sound was getting bigger and approached their friends Brian(bass), Sean (guitar) and Stuart (drums) to join forces on a new endeavor.
After tossing around various ideas, the five new bandmates booked their first gig together on a whim. Never having played together as a full band before, they drove to Amagansett, Long Island and sequestered themselves in a barn for a week, soundproofing the walls with blankets and rehearsing day and night. This quickly turned them from casual collaborators into a true band.
Their goal was to create a band unlike any of the band members' previous projects. The result was just that, and was also unlike anything most people have heard before. This five-piece rock n' roll band has roots set deeply in anthemic melodies, ambient harmonies and classic Americana, combining elements of The Arcade Fire, The Rolling Stones and My Morning Jacket to name a few. They strive to combine the intimacy of a backroom bar band with the massive sound of an arena rock act, and promise to "whisper in your year one minute and holler at you from the top of a mountain the next."
Rocket and The Ghost's debut recording will be released in the late fall of 2012.
