Ghana had been free from polio since 2003. However, it detected eight confirmed cases in the Northern region in September 2008. Polio is an acute viral disease that is easily spread by human to human contact and could kill or cripple children for life.
Ghanas Ministry of Health with support from UNICEF, WHO and other partners vaccinated 4.8 million children against polio through two rounds of nationwide Polio Immunisation Campaigns on 12 -14th February and 26 28th March 2009.
This campaign was part of a synchronized response by 8 West African countries to eradicate polio from the sub-region. The countries participating are Benin, Togo, Niger, Nigeria, Cote dIvoire, Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana.
