http://www.zsl.org The Zoological Society of London has released the first known footage of the purple frog, one of its EDGE Focal species, taken during ZSLs ongoing conservation work in the Western Ghats in India by S. D. Biju. The purple frog is the sole representative of an ancient lineage of frogs that has been evolving independently for over 130 million years. Its closest relatives are the Seychelles frogs, the ancestors of which were present on the Indo-Madagascan land mass with the purple frogs predecessors when it broke away from the supercontinent of Gondwana 120 million years ago. Formally discovered in 2003, the purple frog spends most of the year underground, surfacing only to breed during the monsoon. It was the first new family of frogs to be discovered since 1926. This species is threatened by ongoing forest loss for coffee, cardamom and ginger plantations. ZSLs purple frog project is part of its EDGE programme, is being run in association with the University of Delhi, with funding from the Peoples Trust for Endangered Species. (Watch in high quality)

  • This one here Mr. Ancient Purple Frog is quite something!! They live 16 feet underground for 11 months in a year. No wonder they are so difficult to spot. But I have my loyalties to cute little tree frogs :)) and some of them for their tiny size can be very loud and clear

  • Imbalance of the global ecosystem is a threat to human health and the change in aqautic habitats caused by chemicals are taking a toll on man however unfortunately frogs are bearing the brunt of it. Help save the frogs and yourself. They are wonderful creatures. Before my sister made me see frogs in their very very cute light, they were just another another kind of creature. Now i appreciate their importance and also they are totally adorable!! <3
