The USSR had a viewgraph for a buildable system that would be launched off the back of a cargo aircraft called MAKS. It had a tri-propellant rp1/LH2/LOX rocket motor and an expendable external tank like the shuttle, but no SRBs.
The fully reusable version of MAKS with an integral tank was made of unobtainium wishalloy, and even the engineers dismissed it as impossible at the time.
