Ravel's pre-Holocaust hommage to the "gypsies", shows a different stance towards the Roma and Sinti peoples than is usual these days in populist Sarkozian France, annex post-communist, nationalist EU.

It's the version with orchestra.

  • If I am correct, this is "the embodiment of the Apollinian" aka the great Grumiaux playing !

    Sure is.

  • This girl must be the most famous (alas) Limburgian of all times. She was NOT a Jewess, but a Romani/Sinti and her name was Settela Steinbach. She came from Buchten, near Born. Her father was, i.a., a violinist... The headscarf she wore because she was embarassed about her bald shorn head. At the moment that the photograph was taken, she was watching 2 little dogs playing near her train. The train is in Westerbork and heads for Auschwitz, where she will be gassed.
