The Toyota RAV4 was redesigned for the 2001 model year, and advanced frontal airbags were added to 2004 models. All RAV4 models manufactured after December 2003 also include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a 2004 RAV4 with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar/roof rail hit was low.

I was in an accident in a 2001 Rav4 . 65mph dead on a stopped car. This is pretty much it, except the seat-belt kept me from hitting the airbags. 3 of us in the car, escaped with broken ribs, cracked sternum, and broken ankle. All things considered the best possible result we could have hoped for. 65mph-dead stop...
