The Hell's Hole Trail starts at 9,600 feet and ends on the edge of timberline at 11,200 feet. The first half of the trail is a steady uphill pull along a route which runs parallel to West Chicago Creek. Evergreens and thick aspen groves make this an especially pleasant summer hike.
The trail may be reached from Idaho Springs by driving 5.5 miles southwest on Hwy. 103. Turn south (right) at the first switchback onto Forest Route 188 and continue on the dirt road for about 3 miles. The trailhead is located just past the West Chicago Creek Campground, and is well marked with a large sign on one side of the parking area.
