Next time that california sort of scientist should cover the eyes of the patients. You can already trick the brain brain into believing that you experience pain, have body parts and other sort of stuff just with some simple optical setups. For example: There is an experiment in which your brain will start to believe that a simple rubber glove laying infront of you on a table is your hand.
