Whitman President George Bridges throws out the first ball

At a July 13 Walla Walla Sweets baseball game, Whitman College President George Bridges threw out the ceremonial first pitch — which, in Sweets tradition, is an onion, not a baseball. His catcher was Mark Michaud, Whitman's assistant baseball coach who also serves the Sweets as pitching coach.

Whitman student Patricia Xi, one of many students and alumni who are members of the Sweets team, helps prepare first-pitch throwers for their assignment. Here she leads President Bridges to Sweet Lou, the team mascot, who escorts him to the mound.
