  • Ahh, the GARY. This was my first Command and I made this video while I was still an Ensign. My second tour was aboard an Aircraft Carrier, USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74). Can you imagine what a change in pace...and firepower? Some comparisons: Crew: FFG: 20 Off, 108 Crew CVN: 300 Off, 4,700 Crew Aircraft: FFG: 1-2 helos CVN: 85-90 fixed wing planes/helos Irony: FFG: Called Guided Missile Frigate, no Missiles CVN: Called Aircraft Carrier, has MANY Missiles (both Ship&Aircraft)

  • Nice watching a ship I did the testing on :The MK 92 guidance system at Mac field LI NY

  • it would be so fun to be in a bathing suit inside the missle thing @ 1:06

  • @VocalIntuition true but pirates cant tell the difference between a cruiser and this thing anyway.

  • @Nielsenkc Probably because a cruiser may be a little more intimidating? Just my guess. :D

  • This class of FFG is only good at anti submarine warfare and some limited surface to surface warfare. But this ship is awesome off the coast of Somalia with the 76mm gun some have a 40mm chain gun and a bunch of 50s cals. Anyway why send a cruiser when u can send this thing to do it better and cheaper.

  • ...in place of the MK13 launchers.. Still it might have been interesting to operate the FFGs in pairs/groups with one ship still equipped with the MK13 (and the last fire control updates i.e. Mk 92 Mod 6 CORT with SPS-49(V)5/SYS-2(V)2) and one with the new gun and perhaps SeaRAM. Bottom line is the navy doesn't want to throw more money into the FFGs for the limited lifespan remaining.

  • The semi-official story is that the Mk13 launcher arm was removed from all US ships to provide parts for other countries using the system and because the SM-1 was at end of life. It didn't hurt the navy's case for the money to fund the LCS ships that the FFGs were no longer capable of slinging serious missiles - something the LCS ships cannot currently do despite some other nice features they offer for small ships. The last ten FFGs built have received Mk 38 mod 2 guns with nice optics.

  • @dokaw They have a missile launcher with SM-1 and Harpoon, no box launcher needed.
