2011 Capstone Project, University of Louisville, Created by Jordan Colburn, Paul Faget, and Seth Tucker. Using a TL494 motor control chip, an input audio signal is turned into PWM to switch a MOSFET bridge. This in turn switches a flyback transformer at 35VDC. The resulting output is a stream of plasma that produces audio. The system was built incorporating an adjustable active crossover network that allows you to connect another speaker to function as a woofer to producs bass frequencies. The resulting audio would be much more impressive if a flyback with a higher resonance frequency were found.

  • You must have a lot of time and money on your hands.

  • @Peaceandwellness

Or, I'm an engineering student that had to build a senior project. We have have neither time, nor money. This thing only cost about $60 to build.

  • Very nice setup including the sound cone used on the plasma speaker. I'v uploaded and built a few setups using this design, plans can be found at hvlabs.com under plasmasonic speaker

  • @hvlabsdotcom We used a similar driver circuit, except we only single tapped the flyback. Also, we had issues running in pulse steering mode. I'm actually not a huge fan of the cone. I feel it added a good bit of distortion to the audio and decreased the available volume. The new version is omnidirectional.

  • @hvlabsdotcom I'm a huge fan of your projects by the way. They're a lot of fun to look at.

  • That's great. Any interest in uploading construction instructions?

  • @jonathansindler

I've been meaning to for some time now, I've been very busy with grad school though. As soon as I have a bit of free time, and I remember to, I definitely will. I'd rather put up the newer version though. It performs a bit better.
