I wish I had known a year ago what I know now about my son and how to engage him in learning. Thanks for watching.

  • I recently attended an annual training through my job. (I work in childcare) The morning session was dedicated to having a better understanding of autism. The speaker showed this clip & it touched my heart, and I found myself sobbing almost uncontrollably. I can tell that Chase is a very lucky boy to have a mother like you. Thank you for making such a touching clip.

  • @kayleesmommyj That is GREAT! Chase is six years old now, speaking very clearly in full sentences and attending blended kindergarten, reading, spelling, everything. making an effort to understand IS the key! Yaaaaay!

  • My sister is highly autistic. And, as a brother, I haven't been very supportive. I got angry with her, told her that she was lazy and useless.

This video has really made me more tolerant of my sister. When I realised just how hurtful I must seem to her, it brought me to tears. I just can't believe, comprehend, understand what she must be going through. What she has gone through. What she will go through. She's breaking into the work force now, and I'm backing her 100%.

    Or trying too ;)

  • That's the coolest thing I've heard all day.

Communication can be a big barrier. I know that when I talk with people who are from the South, I tend to judge them as dull or ignorant because they talllllkkk ssssoooooo slllloooooow! I have to remind myself that you can't judge someone by their communication skills.

  • UPDATE:

He said it. ("I love you.")

  • I really like your video, wish there were more Moms like you!

From what other autistics have mentioned on discussion groups, the haircut issue could be upset at the hair being "hurt", or sensory (how the scalp feels, noise of scissors/clippers, feel of hair being moved that way, scent if it's not at home, etc.). Some parents (like mine re: my NT brother) I've known just let it grow, no harm done!

  • Yes, that was one of the last times I ever cut his hair. You gotta pick your battles, ya know? The shaggy look doesn't bother me a bit!

His dad buzz cuts his hair about every four months now.

  • This was beautiful to watch. Very inspirational, thanks!

  • Omigod that brought tears. Lucky for Chase that he has a great mum, you should be so proud. I'm an adult 'aspy' and two of my boys have the same thing.

Someone here said happy children learn. Yes, so true! Tom :)

  • Hello.

  • I HAVE AUTISM XD

I'm soo happy after watching this, you understand me completely.

what u say at 1:48 is soo true... I have trouble making eye contact with people sometimes

    Thank you. That was brilliant>

    Oh, and by the way....

    CHASE IS SOO CUTE!!

  • I had a lump in my throat watching this, my son has autism.

  • that was so amazing <3

  • I have ASD and I find haircuts horrible. I am a girl so the buzz cut thing doesn't work for me (not that my parents haven't threatend in desperation). It is really a combination of many things.1) The hairdressers (and the mall in general) is a very noisy place.2) When the hair hits my skin, or worse still is trapped down my shirt, it's awful.3) You are forced to sit still for a long time.4) The fact that someone is touching you. My parents cut my hair for years and even then it was excruciating.

  • He definitely loves you, and he thanks you for being so loving and supportive.

  • Great vid with an even more awesome song! :D
