His comments re alignment and use of the body core is excellent - so many fail to appreciate this is not an "isolated muscle strength" system (In fact, no real fighting form should be)

No "pulling" or grappling in Tai Chi - if you cant direct your opponents force with an open hand, they are not "empty".

That example is so much more Tai Chi than you realise! No effort, let them come, apply the form.

tai chi is easy to learn hard to master. many taichi people can't use taichi in fighting because they fail to master taichi. they failed to truly realise and master the application of yin yang. real taichi allows you to defeat opponent immediately upon contact. upon slightest contact opponent is uprooted cutting all his strength.

the idea of taiji is to redirect the energy of that 'straight-on attack' or else, generally speaking, the bigger person is going to win. So its up to you. Stack on the kilos, and hope to never come across someone who can redirect your energy, or learn to redirect energy yourself

Not to discount taiji technique, but in my
few "unexpected" confrontations, close-in
hard style ruled the day in particular when
a straight-on attack I drew (assailant) in
grabbed arm and stomped his foot hard (very) w/my workboot. Hard leather heel vs
Adidas = change of mind and suffering.
Could have been much worse.

would be nice if you used your right hand to pull his arm back, as you push him back with your left arm....possibly breaking the elbow!

I'm doing Tai Chi chuan classic style for six years now. Since then, once i've been in a street fight. Actually at first I didn't know what was happening and got a lot of beatings... But I managed to stay focused on my inner strength and found my way to defend myself. my opponent tried attacking me once more and through his own force, I swept him to the ground while my hand struck his ribcase. While he was gasping for air, I decided to run away (for now still the best way stay out of trouble ;))

great vid... i always get picked by the stifu in class when showing the techniques... the weirdest part of tai chi is when you're on the receiving end it's almost like having your chi absorbed by the other person
