I switched to a whole foods, plant based diet since January 1st. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I eat all the time now, but don't count calories, because everything I eat is good for me. I have lost 23 pounds, no episodes of hypoglycemia,if I feel hungry, that is all...I don't feel weak and shaky. My joints feel better, not one episode of GERD, and I have not used a bronchodilator inhaler once!!!!!! Yes it takes more time to cook and shop, but I wont change, feel too good.

As a single mother with a student loan as my only source of income I find eating healthy is expensive. Yet after watching this video I realize that the only thing I can't afford is to not hold my and my daughter's health paramount. EAT WELL BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

unfortunately true. People get touchy when you threaten their bacon supply.

I thought that eating a vegan, whole food, organic diet would be expensive too...but I save so much my not buying meat, eggs, milk, and processed foods that it is actually SAVING me money now....especially since I grow my own herbs, veggies, and strawberries, and I make everything from scratch. I have always been a vegetarian, but after this movie I cannot deny the health, environmental, and ethical benefits of this diet. Keep up the good work.

And I hope s/he stops trying to defend the consumption of an innocent being. Those feelings of vitality are false--how can you eat suffering and be happy?

Um, I think we just learned why most dietitians won't tell you to leave out all animal products. They, like you, are uninformed and are products of a system that is literally controlled by the dairy/meat/egg goliaths.

As for Thoreau and Duncan, my questions would be: Vegan, sure, but were they only eating whole foods? Where they chugging the veggie fats rather than keeping them only to a handful of nuts or seeds? Or did they do what many vegans do and stick to the white flour/sugar/shortening products while expecting to be healthy. There's a great difference between what's traditionally considered a 'vegan' or 'vegetarian' diet and the forks over knives way.

I like to look at what I remember of Dr. McDougall's comments in one of his articles. Have some eggs at Easter. Have some Turkey at Thanksgiving and some ice cream at your birthday. The few and far between feast days are acceptable to have a few bites of animal products and be healthy (this depends on whether or not you are already starting with a health problem or are being preventative). Its your year-round commitment to leave out the meat and junk while eating whole plant foods that counts.

Don't buy sugar, junk food, eggs, butter and meat. You'll be surprised how much money you begin to save, which you can then put into good quality whole plant food. Oh, and don't underestimate the importance of a ripe banana for fruit intake. It also makes a great dessert for special times. You can freeze them and blend them with a little water or soymilk to make ice cream. Leave plain, or add cinnamon, a handful of walnuts or berries and Yum!

If you want to do this on the cheap, start by hitting the bulk bins/bottom of the shelves at a regular grocery store. Learn to cook brown rice, beans, oatmeal, lentils, split peas, barley, and other items of this sort with herbs/spices. In the freezer section, get bags of peas, corn, mixed veg or other favorites when they are on sale. Go to produce and get cheap bags of regular potatoes, onions, carrots, apples...look to what is on sale and in season and you will find a good price.
