Why are people saying that the Wii is on it's way out? Well, it seems to stem from this New York Times article, where the paper rightly points out that Wii owners buy about one game less per year then the owners of a PS3 or Xbox 360. According to the piece, Wii owners buy 3.7 games per year, while PS3 and Xbox 360 owners buy 4.6 and 4.7 games per year respectively. Fanboys for the latter two systems are using that figure to point to the death of the Wii. It seems like everywhere I turn somebody has an unbelievable and convoluted story about how their Wii is just gathering dust in a corner and is not being played (if that was the case Craigslist would be loaded with used Wiis for sale and it isn't).
The problem with this situation is that the New York Times stats don't tell the whole story.
According to Nexgenwars, a website that tracks the current battle for supremacy in the video game space, there have been 21 million Wiis sold worldwide. Xbox 360 has sold 18 million units and there have been nine million PS3s sold globally. Now, take the numbers that the Times reported and you will see that Wii owners buy around 77.7 million games for their consoles annually. 360 owners buy 84.6 million and PS3 owners buy 41.4 million. If you are to apply the logic that the Wii-doomsday-sayers have been perpetrating, then its the PS3 that's in real trouble.
