I really don't think Chet intended to invent a "new" breathy tone on the trumpet. Sounds more like his chops just weren't responding this particular day.

The sound (soft low register whisper attack) he produces here and on 'Estate' ... as well as one 'Funny Valentine' improvisation ... were ... and are a new style ... hinted at by others BUT not developed to this degree.
