A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature (in this case the harmony /melody) that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries but often of little relevance or use. In other words, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature. They work best with the stoned! Just listened to the track again. It's alright, I suppose. What I like is the fact that he had an idea and tried it out...just not my cup of tea, that's all.
@lowgrowl5 sorry what is a gimmick in musical terms? I remember hearing this for the first time, i was kind of stoned and i thought it was the best thing ever lol
Yeah that weird key shifting thing in the melody is just vaguely ear-arousing (we're all so used to this standard) and that's about it...it's no improvement on the original head though. I know jazz -among other things- is all about revisiting classics but I just think this one doesn't work and remains what it is = a gimmick. I still respect immensely Grant Green though ! Why? because he can certainly improvise and he has a distinct voice which is instantly recognisable.
actually supposed to be Sonny Rollins take on Gershwin's "I got Rhythm. Of course Green took the 335 and whatever Fender amp, dimmed up the middle tone, and went insane
some Blakey licks in there

@lowgrowl5 having an idea and trying it out is called creativity. If everybody played every tune as is all the time the world would be a boring place
