We are not a nation of whiners, as Phil Gramm would have it, but the G.O.P. is now the party of whiners. That rebranding became official when Republican House leaders moaned that a routine partisan speech by Nancy Pelosi had turned their members against the bailout bill. As the stock market fell nearly 778 points, Barney Frank taunted his G.O.P. peers with pitch-perfect mockery: Somebody hurt my feelings, so I will punish the country!

Talk about the world coming full circle. This is the same Democrat who had been slurred as Barney Fag in the mid-1990s by Dick Armey, a House leader of the government-bashing Gingrich revolution that helped lower us into this debacle. Now Frank was ridiculing the House G.O.P. as a bunch of sulking teenage girls. His wisecrack stung — and stuck.

Palin is an antidote to the whiny Republican image that Frank nailed. Alaskas self-styled embodiment of Joe Sixpack is not a sulker, but a pistol-packing fighter. Thats why she draws the crowds and (as she puts it) energy that otherwise elude the angry McCain. But she is still the candidate for vice president, not president. Americans do not vote for vice president.

So how can a desperate G.O.P. save itself? As McCain continues to fade into incoherence and irrelevance, the last hope is that hell come up with some new game-changing stunt to match his initial pick of Palin or his ill-fated campaign suspension. Until Thursday night, more than a few Republicans were fantasizing that his final Hail Mary pass would be to ditch Palin so she can spend more time with her ever-growing family. But the debate reminded Republicans once again that its Palin, not McCain, who is their last hope for victory.

As soon as the bailout proposal failed in the House, Republican lawmakers began blaming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for its defeat. In a press conference, the GOP leadership faulted Pelosi for giving a partisan speech prior to the vote. In the subsequent Democratic press conference, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) responded to their absurd charge:

Heres the story. Theres a terrible crisis affecting the American economy. We have come together on a bill to alleviate the crisis. And because somebody hurt their feelings, they decide to punish the country. I mean, I would not have imputed that degree of pettiness and hypersensitivity.

We also have — as the leader will tell you, whos been working with them — dont believe they had the votes, and I believe theyre covering up the embarrassment of not having the votes. But think about this. Somebody hurt my feelings, so I will punish the country. Thats hardly plausible. And there are 12 Republican members who were ready to stand up for the economic interest of America, but not if anybody insulted them.

Ill make an offer. Give me those 12 peoples names and I will go talk uncharacteristically nicely to them and tell them what wonderful people they are and maybe theyll now think about the country.

Pelosis speech mentions the word Republican once — in the context of praising them for bipartisanship: Over the past several days, we have worked with our Republican colleagues to fashion an alternative to the original plan of the Bush Administration. After looking at Pelosis speech, CNNs Ed Henry said he couldnt find the partisan thing that they say sort of inflamed Republican members. (View her full speech here.)

A GOP staffer wrote into National Reviews Rich Lowry and acknowledged that Frank was right: Rich Im afraid Rep. Frank has a point on this one. Some feelings on the GOP side were hurt, so they voted against the economic well-being of the country?

  • @JungleShaddow 1 Corinthians 1:18 - the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who are perrishing.. but to the being saved, its the power of God

He went to that cross to die for your sins and pay the punnishement, so that you dont have to go to Hell forever... your only job is to beleive and trust in Him that paid your punnishment in full.. thats what its about
