  • I wonder why her and her company couldn't see what Straight Up would be to begin with. She would have never surfaced without Straight Up I think. She tried hard with her first 2 singles. On another note I wonder how she got away with lip-synching this on Apollo.

  • @MrCrazyKool everyone does it on apollo, its tradition LOL!

  • Great I had never seen this, this is before her breakthrough with straight up right?

  • straight up was actually a b-side to the first single knocked out, but it was removed after then replaced with a knocked out (dub mix)

  • God the nightmare that was VHS

  • @MrCrazyKool I'm sure money had a lot to do with it. She can't sing to save her life. The only way to get her to appear was to allow her to lip-sync. She might as well left the mic backstage.

  • @emocrem0 This was the time when "Knocked Out" and "The Way That You Love Me" were Top 10 R&B singles, but when the label was trying so many "tricks" to get Paula to be an international pop star. Basically, when "Straight Up" took off, the album (which had been out for many months at that point) took off, the label RE-released "Knocked Out" (with two or three versions in rotation, where it finally peaked at #41 in 1990 I think) and re-released this single, which became a Top 10 hit in '89.

  • Back when Paula was trying to "crossover", and marketed to the urban audience . AKA, Paula at her BEST, to be honest.

  • She ROCKS that shit!

  • I know it's just an episode of Apollo, but this performance is awards-show quality!!!

  • YES...YES..YEEEEES!!

  • i totally agree with you

right after the album "head over heels" back in 1995, she had her back and neck surgery and that'swhy today she can't do no mo' those sharp and edgy movements. She avoids any fast movements and sharp gestures in order to not hurt her body...

it's sad but she'll never be able to dance the same way again anymore :(
