a type of gear that can translate rotational motion between two skew (non-concurrent, non-coplanar) lines. Also a way to transfer motion perpendicularly (or at other awkward angles, depending on the angle of the dowels) with relatively low-tech materials, which would have been useful in earlier centuries, as opposed to regular toothed gears or a lantern/half lantern gear combination.
