    Because it was made to play arco and pizzicato-just like the other instruments in the violin family.

  • why do people play double bass w/ a bow. i think it sounds way better (and is easier to play) with standard plucking.

  • It depends on the design. The basses with the sort of hump on the back has a "Swell" back. My bass is a flat back, built in Dresden in 1896.
