Cynics often ask: What is right about America? The answer is fairly obvious in one small area of southwestern Virginia. On a134-acre campus adjacent to the pleasant hamlet of Lexington, Virginia you can witness, as generations have, one extraordinary school—Virginia Military Institute: West Point should now be known as the
"VMI of the North"
Authors note: A special thanks to Colonel Keith Gibson, Virginia Militia, who would have made a darn good Marine and Marine Captain Margaret Smith, VMI 05,currently assigned to the staff of Marine Officer Candidates School, Quantico, Va., who inspired this story about one great school.
Editors note: To read more about Gen John A. Lejeune, see Patrick Brents April 2008, Leatherneck article, Lejeune, Lejern and How to Say It.
Patrick P.T. Brent is proud to be an infantry Marine who served in 2/24 and was also a UPI military correspondent, embedded in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa.
