China's communist regime is launching special training classes for Party officials on how to handle "anti-government" protests.

The move comes as political unrest is on the rise.

China's National Bureau of Statistics says police forces handled nearly 600,000 cases of protests and demonstrations in 2006, the last year for which data was released. That's a 6-fold increase from 2005, and authorities expect these numbers to keep growing.

The anti-protest training seminars began after the October mass riots in Shanghai resulting from the execution of Yang Jia—a victim of police abuse. The seminars teach Communist Party officials how to calm protestors with pre-scripted phrases.

But it's unclear whether it will address widespread concerns, such as illegal land seizures, police abuse and a lack of religious and political freedom.

  • @whytedog This is going nowhere.

  • @whytedog are insignificant because how many of them are protesting? A loony professor who claims Southern California belongs to Mexico does not count because 99.99% of Americans would disagree with him. And I know you say, "oh but he was ALLOWED to protest". Yes, like in China, you see many foreigners coming to shout free Tibet slogans and Christian missionaries spreading pamphlets on the gospel and testaments.

  • @whytedog The Canadian government handed the Uighur over to China, so...

The "reality" is that the Western governments could care less what pro-Chinese have to say. They know any pro-Chinese rally would end with backlash from the majority of the American public. You say the number of foreigners protesting are insignificant. Well, the number of Chinese nationals protesting are insignificant as well. I haven't heard of any pro-Chinese rally in the US. Furthemore, those "protests" you point out

The reality is that the U.S government like many Western governments allowed the pro China protests is because Western governments permit the freedom of protest within reason. For example on Youtube you can find an example of a University of California Professor holding a rally and proclaiming parts of Southern California and other parts of the U.S.A rightfully belong to Mexico. Likewise in New Zealand some Maori publicly state they are not New Zealanders

  • @Noobssuckass300 Where exactly did you read Huseyincan Celil was deported from Canada on criminal charges? Anyway the decision of the Chinese authorities to execute a Canadian citizen on such a outlandish charge as "Splitting the Motherland" without having a Canadian diplomat present at the trial is hardly consistant with a country that places paramount importance of maintaining good relations with Canada.

  • @Noobssuckass300

The Occupy Wall Street activists were arrested because it was a long term occupation of public space. As they were literally camping with tents, field kitchens and sleeping bags. They weren't simply protesting they were occupying public space long term. The simple fact is Western governments permit the public expression of opinion which is critical of government acts while the Chinese government does not. For example Michael Moore there is no Chinese equivalent

  • @Noobssuckass300

No, I didn't support your position at all you still haven't provided an example of Westerners being allowed to protest in China. You simply made a referance to a small scale covert act that resulted in all involved being detained. Which is completely different from the large scale protests by Chinese nationals permitted by Western governments. The whole concept that they were arrested for disturbing the peace is just another cover up.

  • @whytedog public. Likewise, in America, the Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested because they erected tents in Zuccotti Park, which was not allowed at all. Nice try though...

  • @whytedog Well NO DUH. You just supported my position. America has strong diplomatic ties with China. Detaining these protesters would sour relations with China. Likewise, detaining protesters in China would sour diplomatic relations with America. . As for the Uighur Canadian, he wouldn't be killed if he wasn't deported from Canada for criminal charges. The Canadian and American citizens were not arrested because they put up those banners, they were arrested because they were disturbing the

  • @Noobssuckass300

In that case why did they detain Canadian citizens who put up the "Free Tibet" banner on the Great Wall? Why did they arrest American citizens who put up a "Free Tibet" banner on Mt Everest? Why did the Chinese execute a Canadian citizen of Uyghar ethnicity?
