SIMPLE.
Buy links, it's cheaper than PPC - if PPC was cheaper than linking, Google would sell links

I couldn't agree more. The bottom line for most people (not including you or chow) is that without Search Engine traffic, we're S.O.L.
So it's basically, do what google says or have a much higher failure percentage.
