Jim Lucas, Marine/War Correspondent, writes a letter back to his mate in NZ on the horrors of Tarawa. We must always honour the US Marines fight for The Pacific with pride.
There's a memorial in the Auckland Domain (outside The Museum) for The Marines when they stayed, trained & 'socialised' here in New Zealand before embarking to fight the Imperial Japanese forces.
When I go running round The Domain I always stop there to remember them and remind myself not to be a xxxxxxx lazy xxxx in their shadow.
Remembered 11 November 2009:
0/7366 Leading Signalman Campbell Buchanan, MiD, Navy Cross (USA), RNZVNR.
KIA 31 January 1943, Aged 22.
Cape Esperance, Solomons.
