Laurel and Hardy's 1927 silent short 'The Battle of the Century' might be the first large scale food fight (with pies) in film.
If you enjoy that, you also might enjoy the even funnier 1929 silent short 'Big Business' where Laurel and Hardy are door-to-door Christmas Tree salesmen. Needless to say, one sale goes wrong and things escalate to pure comedic chaos.
