Is the message of the Gospel who we are or what we speak? When we believe we are the Gospel, then 'out of the heart the mouth speaks'. The problem again, is that far too many Christians are trained to speak the Gospel out of obligation and not because they really believe they are the Gospel.
I find that the longer I wait to speak to someone about the Lord, the harder it becomes. Remember: our good deeds or friendship can not save anyone, "the Gospel is the power of God to salvation."
Just a reminder of another old saying: "Actions speak louder than words." And how much more louder is it when those actions come from the reality of the Gospel within you.
I agree. Unfortunately many institutional Christians are driven to have a hidden motive of evangelism behind their friendships. It's like somebody befriending you because they have some MLM scheme they want to get you into.
Right, bob, and the unfortunate side-effect is that all new friendships become suspect as you have pointed out. As society becomes more secular, they are also becoming more cynical, and we are partly to blame because of our timidity and equivocation.
There is a lot to be said for simply "shining the light" without apology. The purpose of a lighthouse is to protect a ship from the rocks. A lighthouse that LOOKS like a rock is no good.
How about the Word of God: "Faith comes by hearing the Word of God." (Romans 10:17). If you don't apply this (ie SPEAK the Gospel), how will anyone know how to be saved from the wrath that is to come.

One plants through preaching. Another waters through friendship. If anybody ever repents at all, it is God who gives the increase.

Well said. If we're at rest in the truth that the Light lives in us, we can't help but shine in word and deed.
