This kind of thing is unsurpassed, is it not? I've been through a lot of music in my years...this consistently strikes me as something quintessential. To put it simply, he tapped into a vein. It's not so simple, though, because it requires a lifetime to get there. I bet he just forgot about how good this is, or maybe just saw it as unfit for popular consumption...which I understand, but I think he underappreciated how much people appreciate a sincere melody. Everyone underestimates the public.
