The region centring upon the capital, Antananarivo, is inhabited by large numbers of Merina, a people of Malay descent. Here, in Antanifotsy, the people closely resemble Asians in appearance.

  • The Merinas are descendants of Malayo-Indonesian settlers. Their language is part of the Malayo-Polynesian family of languages. They now form an important part of the Malagasy population. Many of their words are the same as standard Malay such as "mentah" (raw) and "buku" (book)

  • @bahasajawi No, most are Christians. Most Muslims in Madagascar live in the north of the island and many are of non-Malagasy descent.

  • These people are Merina/ Malagasy from Madagascar. Merina are the Malagasy mostly from the Capital of M/kar Antananarivo and region.
