this concept really blows me away. its unfortunate how people neglect the beauty and enigmatic character of these ancient tunes. thank you for keeping improvisation alive!I hope im not being annoying, but i have a youtube channel which has solo guitar improvisations on my yamaha guitalele guitar. it would honour me if you watched one of my videos.

Great lesson! Actually one of the most informative video lessons on improvisation I have watched.. I like the fact that you bring up theory behind the licks and also play in several different styles..

Thanks Tom;
I am going to do a whole series of video lessons for Spring, which will be free and built around this idea. This was a quick post last night, which has been met with some pretty hard critique off Youtube. I guess I hit a raw nerve. People don't want to be reminded of how much ground they need to cover. I still practice basic chord solos every day. Its nice to see another teacher that thinks it is important.

Hey Rob,
Lots of nice ideas presented here. I once had a student quit on me because I suggested learning to play some simple melodies like these in every position - guess he was too cool for that!

Thanks John,
I have to make that fight every day. I have gotten several replies off Youtube to the effect that this is a useless exercise, but I have found that most players can't do this, but want to somehow learn to improvise on more complex themes. If they can't do this, Scrapple From the Apple is a long way off.
