I'd have to check with my sensei, but the reason I think we're not allowed to use the cheap katanas in shinkendo tameshigiri is because their cheap construction makes them dangerous. They can fall apart or even break at especially hazardous moments. Our katanas must be approved by Sensei Obata, and they usually start around $2000. Of course, maybe Brody's "cheap" katana was $2000. A sharp katana to hang on your wall can cost only $150. Just don't rely on it. ;)
