Yes, Egan tells how man destroyed the great prairie in a matter of a few years after it had stood the test of time for centuries and had evolved an amazing ecosystem that supported the great bison herds. Greed plundered and plowed that all up in a blink of an eye.
Thanks for the name of the book! I wanna see if they portrayed the real picture of what happened! Most history look at the accoupants as heroes for sticking it out, but they rarely show who was at fault! It was a man made disaster!!!
I'm just finishing Timothy Egan's book about the Dust Bowl, "The Worst Hard Time." The Dust Bowl was about 100 times worse than I ever could have imagined -- one of the biggest man-made environmental disaster in world history until recent times (global warming).
Its funny how the Indians (real Americans) and Buffalo co-existed with this topography for millennia, but as soon as Spaniards/White men came into the picture, they destroyed it all in a matter of 3 decades. What a sad but true fairy tale! But it should come as no surprise since they have been destroying the world since the 1400s

I am white, and I take no resposability for my forbears...but the dust bowl is a sad reminder of how fragile life can be.
