THE MIGHT OF MOTOWN...

Cindy is not on this track and neither is Florence Ballard. This was completed on July 8, 1966. Just a few days before this song was completed, "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Misery Makes Its Home In My Heart" were completed. Both of those songs have Marlene Barrow singing in the background with Mary Wilson. It applies with this song too. No Cindy, No Flo - just Diana, Mary and Marlene.

Well, it's not a cover. It's the original version of the song! When Jimmy Ruffin recorded it the introductory spoken passage was taken off the final single release. But it was this Supremes version that was the model for what he did. At least half a dozen Motown acts did the song before the Jimmy Ruffin version was chosen for release. The Supremes themselves were surprised when this showed up on L.P. years after the fact.

@suedemiddleton This is not intended as being offensive to anyone but I don't think you guys really know what Florence sounds like. She could go extremely high and sometimes she would sing contralto (very low) on certain songs. On this particular song you can hear Flo clearly because she pronouces her words very "properly" and she tends to exaggerate certain phrases (listen at the word Broken in the song) Check out the live recordings from the new Meet The Supremes deluxe set to really hear her.

@suedemiddleton No Cindy or the Andantes were not added to this track, this track was recorded and finished in 1966 whilst Flo was in the group, so it is just Flo, Nary and Diana on this track, this track was used as a filler for Let the Sunshine In album but was clearly done during Flo's reign.
I do agree that Flo is very hard to hear on this, but on certain bits you can hear her when she does a few high bits. lol. Hope this helps? xxxxx

I was listening to this song and I was trying to figure out who was on background. I know I could recognize Mary in there, but I hear Diane on backgrounds too. I cannot hear Florence. She may be doing a middle harmony in there somewhere. I hear Mary on the low end and Diane on the high end. If Cindy was added, I can't tell.
It's a great version of the song.
This song never interested me till the supreams got ahold of it, and it blew me away!

This song was actually recorded in 1966. So this have been Florence Ballard and not Cindy Birdsong. The song wasn't released until 1969 on the Let The Sun Shine In Album

This is my favorite Supremes "cover". Diana's "babygirl" voice and the bass guitar with the background harmonies are a perfect marriage.
