@schymcgee Sailing is not dangerous, nor is it unpredictable. Reaching your destination by sail is entirely dependent upon the resolve and competence of the crew.

Good God ! You sail on a luxury yacht.
By the way, had you a good old reefing system you wouldn't have run into such trouble.
That's why so many all year blue water salors stick to them : a bit of work each time but less hassle that can turn trouble into danger.

hey i'm thinking of sailing across the atlantic in a naudicat 52.5. i looked at a sawn but the lack of a pilothouse made me nervous. so i'm thinking i will get a naudicat. any thoughts on it? my crew will consist of myself and 2 others. i can get more crew if you feel it is necessary

Ya that was about 35 knots that day....We did see 55 - Had the Main semi furled, but after time, the 55 popped all of the Main out of the Boom..needless to say that was a complete shtshow. Trying to fix a furling boom mandrel in 55 knots, with the sail bagged out at the bottom, and the boat fully heeled over...rip in the main...Typical though of Ocean Sailing !

how long does it usually take to sail across the atlantic.. from the US to lets say the UK. and also western europe. please get back to me. and is it dangerous? and can you make money by joining a crew to sail across the atlantic?

We were doing a race that was trying to break the Schooner "Atlantic" s 100 year record set in 1905, of 10 days. Most of the race we had light winds, so we were took roughly 14 days, though Maximus and Mari Cha IV did it in 8 or 9 days. It can be dangerous like all offshore sailing, but not really. Yachts are often looking for paid crew, I believe there are some websites for that, tho I'm not sure. Good Luck.
